Learning Activity 3: Log Me
My Interview Notes:
Description of Authentic
Assessment
It
is a performance based assessment which requires students to relate or apply
real life situation. It is student centered because all the work will be done
by students. The teacher’s role is to facilitate, monitor and evaluate. No
questionnaires to be prepared unlike traditional assessment, the work are all
centered in the teacher. Authentic assessment also is all about application.
Its not just mere recalling or recognizing yet it involves the creativity of
students, the way they interact towards their classmates and other people
involved.
How was Authentic Assessment
used? Was it used to measure learning through the product? Explain.
Authentic assessment is used to measure learning through
the product in a way that students will showcase their product and explains why
or how did they come up with such an output. And also throughout a numerous
product made, students will present their best product, through reporting or
demonstration. For example, the subject is all about dressmaking so in order
for the teacher to measure their skill in sewing, students will have to make
their design of dress and present it on class. Sometimes also we require
students to make their own portfolio and portfolio is not only about showing
the process or the progress but it also showcases the best work of students
that is one example why authentic assessment also focus on the product.
Or focuses on the process?
Authentic assessment does not focus only on the product made
by students but it also focuses on the process. In dressmaking, it is not
enough that students will present only the product they made. The teacher also
need to know whether they had really acquired the skill and mastered it. And
through authentic assessment the teacher will be able to measure the skill
shown by the student through demonstration and etc.
My Reflection Journal:
What are your insights and
feelings about the use of authentic assessment?
For me, authentic assessment don’t have much pressure on
the side of the teacher and it has less burden because this assessment is
centered on students, so the work in the part of the teacher is not heavy at
the same time I think it’s more reliable in some aspects. For example, if the
teachers want to measure the skills acquired by the students then the teacher
can see it through demonstration compared to paper and pen test. In paper and
pen test what we can measure is the cognitive skill of the student yet we can’t
measure the psycho motor and affective skill of the student. So through
authentic assessment we can measure the three domains.
Describe how the teacher
used the authentic assessment.
In authentic assessment the role of the teacher is to
first facilitate by presenting the concept of the task. For example, the task
is all about demonstrating how to sew a dress. So the teacher first introduces
the purpose of the task. Goals must be set in order for the students to know
what to aim. Then describe what are the things to do and also present the list
of criteria or rubric for the said task. Then throughout the making of the task
or presentation the teacher monitors and evaluate.
How did you feel about the teacher’s
used of authentic assessment?
For me as a future teacher I felt less pressured in not making lots of
questionnaire and also it has less in preparation unlike in paper and pen test there
is a need of time to formulate questions.
What could be the gains of
students and teachers in authentic assessment?
Students may develop or gain skills related to real life
situation such as creativity,self-assessment, goal setter, and develop
self-esteem and confidence towards interacting to their classmates and other
people involved. And in the part of the teachers, it assures reliability in
measuring the acquired skills of the students. As this assessment is student
centered this helps teacher to lessen their work.
