Approach

IMPRESSION: The teachers should be aware of the wide application of these learning resources most specially the technology to prepare and present their lessons. Interest and needs are the main factors to be considered on the part of the students in acquiring and gaining knowledge and skills. These learning resources are helpful but its effectiveness depends on its proper application.

MY ANALYSIS:
How are the materials arranged? Are they classified according to their functions and characteristics? Relate your observations here.
·         The learning resources and materials are properly arranged. And it is accessible to everybody.

Are the guidelines in place to facilitate access of the teachers to these resources?
·         The guidelines’ and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the teachers because it is specific.

What are the strengths of the resources?
·         The strength of the Learning Resource Center is the computers are available during school days as long as it is their vacant time and students can use it in doing their assignments, preparation of hand-outs and any other related computer-based works.

What are their weaknesses?
·         Some computers are not working and need maintenance.. And also there is less number of units compared to the population of the students that some might have no opportunity in using the Learning Resource Center.

What do you suggest to improve the resources?
·         I suggest that they should put additional units and hire a person who could maintain the computers in a good state. There should also be an extension on the area.

MY REFLECTIONS:
Which of the materials have caught your attention most? Why?

·         The materials that caught me most is the computer lab or the computers. In this generation we are exposed to technology. Anyone who can’t trend in is considered to be incompetent. But then how about those people who are indigent and can’t provide to buy their own trend. So the school which is the common ground to everyone provides this opportunity to let students or children to defeat ignorance towards technology. That is why I appreciated the computers most. And they also got new computers and numerous ones compared to other schools I had visited they got more computers than I expected.

Which gadget/equipment are you confident to use operate?
·         I am confident in using the computer, e.g. the basic software like Microsoft word, excel and etc., basic html also and basic programming like JAVA programming.

Which equipment do you feel you need to learn more about?
·         I think I want to learn or make a hands-on on installing LCD projectors which I haven’t yet tried even once.

Importance of Educational Technology Towards Mathematics

Technology had been the trend of this new generation. Students today are considered as the "Digital Native" as they are born and raised with these digital environment and think differently because of their too much exposure to these technologies. They are more fun of it and even exert more time in their gadgets rarher than solving Math problems. Students are more expose to these tools, they are more expose to video games, entertainment and etc. Because of these tools also they can do things easily, answer their assignments in an easy way and even make communications to other people throughout the world. Somehow technology made our life easier but some people had misused and they even now depend on it. As to students, children become lazy in doing their projects and assignments. In response to this, the education specialists made an integration. Education is now integrated to technology. Variety of technology was used just to assist the pedagogy of teachers. In all subjects technology is integrated even in Math. And now educational Technology was used, sometimes this is called as EdTech. EdTech aims to improve education. And this is important in all subjects including Math.
We might be able to ask in what manner or how does technology helped teachers and learners towards math learning. Here are some benefits

        1. Easy to access . Having an educational web page that posts course materials can let students easy to acquire course materials. And so they will be able to study in advance. They can even study in their preferred place and time.
        2. Individualized Instruction. The internet contains lots of websites and other things that enables students to easily search on something or someone. Videos, pictures and others helped students to understand a topic. For example, the youtube contains of videos somehow educational videos which will let students to receive an individualized instruction which is level to their understanding. In any means, struggling students and gifted ones may be able to enhance or advance their learning without being frustrated.especially in Math
        3. Students are being motivated.  Students say math is a boring subject. They hate numbers and so the hate the subject. In order to motivate them we have to lure them through technology. They love it. And so their motivation will be dragged out as they used technology in learning Math.

These are some reasons why educational technology is also important in learning or teaching Math. Take note, EdTech is not only about computers but its also about using different types of technology that can be used in teaching or assisting learners.

My Reflection
In the observation I had made, it made me aware of different kinds of assessment and how it was used. As a teacher, it is important to know and master different kinds of assessment to appropriately assess the students in a fair way. During the observation also I had determined the difference of product oriented assessment and the other. In assessing the students we may use process-oriented assessment, product-oriented or both. Both assessments cited can be used in the same task as long as it achieves the learning objective. Somehow not all the time this can be used at the same time and task. There are instances that we need to use it separately. For example, if your goal is centered on the student’s output then we need to use the product oriented assessment but if it is centered in the performance of the student then the process oriented assessment is appropriate to be used.
In using both assessments it is better to use the same task if you want to rate both the performance and the product of the student and also to rate these assessment we need to use a rubric to fairly rate the students. And also in giving the rubric the students will be able to determine in what they had to focus. The rubric will serve as the guide to both the teacher and the student.

Learning Episode 4 :MYMP

Analysis :

Why do teacher needs to give attention to students performance based tasks ? Why do they need to assess them ?

A teacher needs to give attention to students performance based tasks to know the skills and abilities of the students whether there is a progress or none, whether they really had acquired the skill or if the objective is attained. That is also the reason why they need to assess the students : to know if the objective is achieved.

In what conditions can the process oriented performance assessment be more appropriate ?

Process oriented performance assessment is a way of assessing in which the process of having such output is being rated. So in this assessment it involves the attitude, knowledge, habits and ability in which these are the factors how they come up to a certain performance or output. This assessment is more appropriate when rating an actual task performance of the activity. It is also useful if you want to know in what conditions student can work to arrive in a certain output. As a teacher if I want to grade the cluster of skills and abilities needed for the particular activity I can use this assessment. Example if I want to rate the abilities or skills in reciting a poem such as there memorization, their gestures upon reciting, the eye contact then this assessment is applicable.

Reflection

As what I had observed, being a teacher is not easy, it looks tiresome but enjoyable and somehow interesting and challenging. The performance based assessment and process oriented assessment can't just be rated like a paper and pen test that the accurate number of points is measurable or can be counted. In these assessments there is a need to create a rubric or list of criteria in order to assessed or rate the performance of the student properly and fairly and also the rubric will let the students know what are the aspects to be rated. So in these type of assessments also I had observed that the teacher and the students discussed about the criteria and objectives of the assessment so there is a conference done before the implementation of the task. So I think this kind of assessment help teachers and students to communicate well.

NOTES ON MY PROCESS-ORIENTED ASSESSMENT PLAN

Name of the School Observed : Bayabas National High School
School Address : Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro City
Date of Visit : July 23,2013
Grade/ Year Level : Grade 8
Subject Area : Physics
Subject Matter : Ohm’s Law

Best Features of the process-oriented performance based assessment design.

The best features of my process-oriented performance design is is that to show how efficient the students are in explaining the concept of the topic assigned in their own understanding and words.

Specific conditions necessary to successful use of process-oriented performance assessment design.

T o successfully use this design there is a need to make a task prior to the objectives and give it to the students. Make sure there is a rubric attached for that certain task.

Basic points to be considered by the user in designing performance based assessment.

The basic points to be considered by the user in designing performance based assessment are the resources and facilities or instruments and materials to be used. Be sure the resources to be used in the task given has high availability. Next is the money, it should be cheap more or less materials to be used are indigenous. Another point to consider is the people involved in the task and also the time to be spent upon making the task.

Learning Activity 3: Log Me

Learning Activity 3: Log Me

My Interview Notes:
Description of Authentic Assessment
It is a performance based assessment which requires students to relate or apply real life situation. It is student centered because all the work will be done by students. The teacher’s role is to facilitate, monitor and evaluate. No questionnaires to be prepared unlike traditional assessment, the work are all centered in the teacher. Authentic assessment also is all about application. Its not just mere recalling or recognizing yet it involves the creativity of students, the way they interact towards their classmates and other people involved.

How was Authentic Assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product? Explain.
Authentic assessment is used to measure learning through the product in a way that students will showcase their product and explains why or how did they come up with such an output. And also throughout a numerous product made, students will present their best product, through reporting or demonstration. For example, the subject is all about dressmaking so in order for the teacher to measure their skill in sewing, students will have to make their design of dress and present it on class. Sometimes also we require students to make their own portfolio and portfolio is not only about showing the process or the progress but it also showcases the best work of students that is one example why authentic assessment also focus on the product.

Or focuses on the process?
Authentic assessment does not focus only on the product made by students but it also focuses on the process. In dressmaking, it is not enough that students will present only the product they made. The teacher also need to know whether they had really acquired the skill and mastered it. And through authentic assessment the teacher will be able to measure the skill shown by the student through demonstration and etc.

My Reflection Journal:
What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?
For me, authentic assessment don’t have much pressure on the side of the teacher and it has less burden because this assessment is centered on students, so the work in the part of the teacher is not heavy at the same time I think it’s more reliable in some aspects. For example, if the teachers want to measure the skills acquired by the students then the teacher can see it through demonstration compared to paper and pen test. In paper and pen test what we can measure is the cognitive skill of the student yet we can’t measure the psycho motor and affective skill of the student. So through authentic assessment we can measure the three domains.
Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment.
In authentic assessment the role of the teacher is to first facilitate by presenting the concept of the task. For example, the task is all about demonstrating how to sew a dress. So the teacher first introduces the purpose of the task. Goals must be set in order for the students to know what to aim. Then describe what are the things to do and also present the list of criteria or rubric for the said task. Then throughout the making of the task or presentation the teacher monitors and evaluate.
How did you feel about the teacher’s used of authentic assessment?
For me as a future teacher I felt  less pressured in not making lots of questionnaire and also it has less in preparation unlike in paper and pen test there is a need of time to formulate questions.

What could be the gains of students and teachers in authentic assessment?
Students may develop or gain skills related to real life situation such as creativity,self-assessment, goal setter, and develop self-esteem and confidence towards interacting to their classmates and other people involved. And in the part of the teachers, it assures reliability in measuring the acquired skills of the students. As this assessment is student centered this helps teacher to lessen their work.
